HI--Im not much of a computer person but--I was so positively impacted by today's seminar--I had to let you know--and to thank you--so thanks for your help--I was so overwhelmed and desperate when I got to that meeting--the transition for my son going on the pump has been a total roller-coaster ride and we are both frustrated and Im exhausted by this--it seems to be taking over our lives a little--despite my intentions not to let that happen. I know that this is a marathon-not a race and in light of all that is going on around the world-not that big a deal--not too terrible--still that doesnt change the need for me to be taking the best care possible of my child and teaching him to take care of himself--and I feel so out of control--everyone there was so incredible helpful and just plain understanding--I didnt want to hijack the meeting--and am uncomfortable as the focus of attention--but was worried about my son and was so grateful when you said--lets get this kid back on his pump--thank you so much--I was screaming that in my head but couldn't verbalize it--very shy--Im again hopeful of getting some kind of handle on this--cant even really express what a great experience that was --also for my son--he usually will freak if I speak about his diabetes in front of others but I think felt relieved and positive seeing all these grown-ups talking about their experiences, pumps, sites etc--soo thanks so much from the bottom of my heart--cheesy but true--hope to see you at the enxt session--susan

Liz. I am attending a luncheon next week where the person representing the Omni Pod will be speaking. I use an Animas Pump and have been very satisfied with both the product and service. I think you have touched on a real profound issue surrounding the acceptance of the disease. I really did not want anyone to know how had diabetes for the longest time. If you read some of my other postings I reveal some of the emotional/psychological issues I have dealt with. I live in Florida. You mentioned beach and thought you might be down here as well?

I delayed going on the pump, or as mine is called the pod, for several years. My hesitation was the outward appearance shouting to the world, "look everyone something is wrong with me." It was easier to pretend I didn't have it when I didn't have it attached to my body. I believe that being a single woman played the biggest role. I didn't want to explain about my diabetes before a date got to know me. What about wearing a bikini when I went to the beach? Once I, thankfully, got past this egostistical reasoning, I took the leap to be syringe free. I believe all the non-pumpers, poders, have their own reasons, may it be financial, appearance or ignorance. However, it changed my life totally. Not just the freedom you gain from not having to tote around vials, etc but you gain better control. If there is anything that is close to an artificial pancreas it is this. I proudly wear my pod. I encourage anyone to make this step.

Thank you for the comment Liz. I have been writing about it and trying to figure out to help others. I have reached out to a few people in my area and this blog is another avenue I am cultivating. The Regional Sales Manager of my Pump company gave me the figure of 90% for people not on the pump. I don't know if it is true or not but I understand that there is a strong reluctance with many as to going with the pump.

The analogy of the car to diabetes is a good one. It is hard to believe that 90% of type 1s aren't on pump therapy. It really is the difference. It has made me feel more in control which is so necessary. With all else that we have to face in life it is important to be able to feel some hope and not doom living with diabetes. I am really resinating with your blog and appreciate your willingness to share.

Heuristics in themselves are a set of rules. But you can have a heuristic that carries out irrational behavior. For example, everytime I see a fool moon, I could start crying because I believe the world will end. I am following a pattern that is not based on a rational foundation. Next time you play golf, be mindful of the heuristics you use. Are they all based on reason?

Isn't heuristics by it's nature a rational approach to problem solving and decision making?

Humans are by no means rational creatures. We are creatures of patterns and heuristics. Heuristics work well because they can result in relatively quick decision making given limited information and a limited search time. I concur that we take things under "faith". Try reasoning out every breath and tell me if you have enough energy left over to blink.

Well.....
Results are A1C's below 6.5, a realization and constant reminder that excercise is the key to success. I have explored yoga as a parallel to the concept of balance and have had a lot of insight and results from that as well.......
