The Great Work

What is the purpose of ‘Creation?” Why are you here? “What’s it all about?” Why do the ‘responses’ to these questions seem so illusive?

There are answers.

A few of them are very comprehensive. For example, a religion is a system that provides assumptions, understandings, agreements, procedures, governing principals. Most religions are based on Scripture such as the Bible, The Quran and The Bhagavad Gita.

There are also very simple and concise answers to these big questions. The New Age Spiritual movement that began in the 1960’s expressed it as simply “LOVE.” Or, some say it is Nature.

Both the comprehensive response and the short one falls woefully short of “hitting the nail on the head.

“The” Mind vs Consciousness

“The Great Work” is confronting, exploring, doing inquiry, becoming illuminated and integrating what you discover in your quest to Know Thyself. You can attain all of the wisdom of the outer world but if you have not turned within to explore you have only tapped into 1% of what is possible.

How do we approach this?

There is a process. It is a process of purification. It is a process of elimination. A great zen master once said, “Life is like walking around a circle. Does not matter much where you are. What is important is to keep moving. Don’t get stuck.”

I have been “presenting” a model of this process for the past twenty-five years through guiding others in meditation, yoga and, what I call, “mapquesting.” Mapquesting is awareness and inquiry into different “maps of the territory.” The Territory is “The Truth.” The map is a representation of The Truth.

There are many ways to break down the process. I have chosen to utilize a five step/phase approach. This process can be expanded to eight or thirteen or reduced to three, two and even one. The five phase approach mirrors several other maps of the territory that I have discovered and can share with others.

There are several reasons and benefits to doing The Great Work. The primary purpose is that, whether you know it or not, it is your life purpose to awaken to it, engage in it and share with others.

WARNING!!! You must be willing to doubt everything you know or think you know. You must be willing to suspend your current beliefs, assumptions and understandings of what Creation is all about. Anything you become aware of and inquire into is not to be believed or accepted until you have taken it through the process and made a conscious choice to do so.

This is not a ‘become the best version of yourself” kind of thing. They have been at that for decades now. This is a quest. I compare it to going on a hike. As your guide I am here to take you down different paths of inquiry and point out “signs” along The Way. At no time will I tell you what to think or believe in. However, I will point out what one could think or believe in.

In our quest, our inquiry will be governed by The Three Steps of Kripalu Yoga and The Buddha’s Three ‘Levels” of Wisdom:

1. Proper Alignment; The Awareness Stage; Courageous Confrontation

2. Discovering and Exploring Your Personal Edge; Intellectual Inquiry and Contemplation Stage. Never push pass your edge. Sometimes less is more.

3. Authentic Free Expression. Illumination and Celebration Stage; Direct Personal Experience. Managing results and cycling back to Stage One – Right Alignment.
